How to Split a PDF Into Multiple Files

A PDF is useful when you want to keep multiple pages together in one document. But sometimes you only need to share a few pages, separate chapters, divide a large report, or create an individual PDF for every page.

Instead of recreating the document, you can split the original PDF into multiple smaller files.

With MagicPDF, you can either separate every page into its own PDF or create files using custom page ranges.

The process does not reduce the quality of the pages.

If you want to get started, use the PDF Splitter and upload your document.

How Does Splitting a PDF Work?

Splitting a PDF means creating new PDF files from pages in an existing document.

For example, imagine you have a 10-page PDF.

You could:

• Create 10 separate PDF files, one for each page.

• Create one PDF containing pages 1–3.

• Create another containing pages 4–7.

• Create a final PDF containing pages 8–10.

The original PDF remains unchanged.

How to Split a PDF with MagicPDF

The process is straightforward and gives you two ways to divide your document.

Step 1: Select the Split PDF Tool

Open MagicPDF and select the Split PDF tool.

You can upload one PDF at a time, with support for files up to 500 MB.

Step 2: Upload Your PDF

Browse your device and select the PDF you want to split.

If you select the wrong document, you can remove it and upload another file before continuing.

Choose How You Want to Split the PDF

After uploading your document, MagicPDF gives you two options.

Split Into Individual Pages

Choose this option when you want every page in the original document to become a separate PDF.

For example, a 5-page PDF would create:

• Page1.pdf

• Page2.pdf

• Page3.pdf

• Page4.pdf

• Page5.pdf

This can be useful when you need to send, organize, or work with each page separately.

Split by Custom Page Ranges

If you only want to divide the document into specific sections, choose custom page ranges.

You can create multiple ranges.

For example, if your PDF has 10 pages, you could create:

• Pages 1–3 → Introduction.pdf

• Pages 4–7 → Chapter-1.pdf

• Pages 8–10 → Final-Section.pdf

You can choose the start page, end page, and file name for each new PDF.

The page ranges cannot overlap, so the same page cannot be included in two different output files.

MagicPDF also shows a preview of how many PDF files will be created before you continue.

Download Your Split PDF Files

Once the splitting process is complete, your new PDF files are packaged into a ZIP file for download.

The ZIP file name is automatically based on the name of your original document.

For example, a file may be downloaded with a name similar to:

example_PDF_500_kB_split_ranges

Extract the ZIP file on your device to access the individual PDF files.

Does Splitting a PDF Reduce Quality?

No.

Splitting a PDF does not compress the document or convert it into another format. The existing pages are separated into new PDF files.

This means the page content and document quality remain unchanged during the splitting process.

If your goal is to make a large PDF smaller, splitting and compression are two different things. You can read our guide on

When Should You Split a PDF?

Splitting can be useful in many everyday situations.

Share Only the Pages Someone Needs

Instead of sending an entire 100-page document, you can separate the relevant pages and share only those files.

Divide a Document Into Sections

A large report, book, or document can be separated into chapters or sections using custom page ranges.

Create Separate Files for Each Page

Individual-page splitting can be useful for forms, invoices, scanned documents, or other files where each page needs to be handled separately.

Make a Large Document Easier to Organize

Several smaller files can sometimes be easier to manage than one long document.

Common Split PDF Problems and How to Fix Them

1. I Selected the Wrong PDF

If you uploaded the wrong document, remove it and upload the correct PDF before starting the splitting process.

2. My Page Range Is Incorrect

Check the start and end page numbers before processing the file.

Remember that custom page ranges cannot overlap.

For example:

• Pages 1–3

• Pages 3–6

would overlap on page 3 and should be adjusted.

Instead, you could use:

• Pages 1–3

• Pages 4–6

3. I Need More Than One Section From My PDF

You can add multiple custom page ranges.

Each range creates its own PDF, allowing you to divide one document into several sections in a single process.

4. I Want to Change the Name of a Split File

When using custom page ranges, enter the desired name for each output PDF before processing.

This can make the downloaded files easier to organize.

5. My PDF Is Password Protected

MagicPDF does not process password-protected PDFs.

You will need access to an unlocked version of the document before using the Split PDF tool.

Only remove protection from a document when you are authorized to do so.

6. My PDF Is Too Large

MagicPDF supports PDF files up to 500 MB.

If your file is larger than the supported limit, you may need to reduce its size or divide the document using another appropriate method before uploading it.

Privacy and Security When Splitting a PDF

Documents can contain personal, business, academic, or other important information, so file handling matters when using an online PDF tool.

MagicPDF does not store the split documents on its server. Your files are processed for the splitting task and are not kept as permanently stored documents.

For sensitive files, always make sure you are authorized to process and share the document.
